The Texas Tech athletics department on Friday reported 23 football players or staff had tested positive for COVID-19 with 21 among them now considered recovered.
Those were the results from 197 tests performed, Texas Tech athletics spokesman Matt Dowdy said.
None of those who tested positive have required hospitalization, Dowdy said.
Tech began to bring football players back to campus June 15 for voluntary workouts. Those who did not test positive for the novel coronavirus continued their workouts as planned, Dowdy said.
A-J Media requested the athletics department’s testing numbers for the coronavirus in an open-records request sent on June 15, including a breakdown of the numbers for the football program and the men’s basketball program.
The Tech public information office said this week it will not release the numbers for the men’s basketball team because the relatively small number of players and coaches would make those who tested positive more easily identifiable.
