Jason Day requests COVID-19 test, plays as a single Saturday at Travelers Championship

CROMWELL, Conn. - Australia's Jason Day requested to be tested for the coronavirus before the start of the third round of the 2020 Travelers Championship.

A message from the PGA Tour did not say whether Day, the 2015 PGA Championship winner, woke up Saturday morning with symptoms of the virus or not.

Day, 32, who was scheduled to play Saturday morning with Rafa Cabrera Bello and Roger Sloan at 8:09 a.m., played his third round of the Travelers Championship as a single, teeing off at 9:15 a.m.

While he missed the cut at both the Charles Schwab Challenge and the RBC Heritage over the last two weeks, Day shot 67-69 to start the weekend T-53 at the Travelers Championship.

On Tuesday, Cameron Champ withdrew from the Travelers Championship after testing positive for the coronavirus, and Graeme McDowell and Brooks each withdrew out of an abundance of caution after their caddies each tested positive. Brooks Koepka, who Monday-qualified, also withdrew even though he, like McDowell and Brooks Koepka, tested negative.

On Friday, Denny McCarthy tested positive and withdrew from the event. One of his playing partners on Thursday, Bud Cauley, also withdrew even though he tested negative. The third member of their group on Thursday, Matt Wallance, tested negative and played as a single on Friday. He missed the cut after shooting 72 in the second round.

According to Evin Priest of the Associated Press Australia, the test came back negative, which is why Day teed off.
