HÀ NỘI — A 67-year-old woman with a history of hypertension and diabetes in the northern province of Bắc Ninh is Việt Nam’s 45th COVID-19 related death, health authorities announced Wednesday.

She was admitted to Thuận Thành District General Hospital on May 11, with a diagnosis of pneumonia and many underlying health conditions.

She tested positive for the coronavirus on May 12 and was transferred to Bắc Ninh Province General Province for treatment, during which she received broad-spectrum antibiotics and anticoagulant drugs, continuous mechanical ventilation and dialysis.

Given her severe illness, the woman’s case was discussed three times by the professional council for acute COVID-19 patients via telehealth on May 17, 18, and 19. She was also given extra medical care by doctors from leading hospitals in the northern region – Bạch Mai Hospital and the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Hà Nội.

On May 25, her condition deteriorated with signs of heart failure and septic shock.

The patient was transferred to the Kim Chung facility of the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Đông Anh District for further treatment. On the way to the hospital, she appeared to suffer a cardiopulmonary arrest for the first time.

In the evening, the patient was in a deep coma and suffered from two more cardiopulmonary arrests and did not survive the night.

The cause of death was noted as septic shock, pneumonia caused by SARS-CoV-2 infection, heart failure in a patient with hypertension, hypothyroidism, diabetes and obesity.

She was the 10th death during the fourth wave of coronavirus infections hitting the country since April 27, which has resulted in a record number of local transmission cases of nearly 3,000 as of Wednesday noon. — VNS
